Trees for Survival Planting Day – Ormsby Farm
Kia ora whānau,
We are excited to let you know that our students of Tui (Y4-8) class will be taking part in a Trees for Survival Planting Day at Ormsby Farm.
Date: Tuesday 21st July (postponement 28th July)
Departure from school:9:15am
Expected return to school: 2:15pm
This will be a fantastic hands-on learning experience for our students, giving them the opportunity to plant native trees and learn more about conservation, sustainability, caring for our environment, and the important role native planting plays in protecting our waterways and supporting biodiversity.
The planting site is located on a working farm and includes sloping and uneven terrain, so students will receive a full safety briefing and will be closely supervised by school staff, adult helpers, the Trees for Survival facilitator and the landowner throughout the day.
Parent helpers welcome
We would love to have parent helpers join us for the day! Having additional adults alongside our students will be a great help and will add to the experience for everyone.
If you are able to come along as a parent helper, please let me know in advance, as we need to confirm our final adult numbers and transport arrangements before the planting day. Please do not simply arrive on the day without letting me know beforehand.
Parent helpers should also be prepared for a physical day outdoors on uneven, sloping and potentially muddy farm terrain and will need to bring the same suitable clothing and footwear as the students.
What students need to bring
Please ensure your child comes prepared with:
A raincoat
Warm clothing
A hat
Garden gloves
Sturdy, enclosed footwear that can get wet and muddy
A change of dry clothes
A bag for muddy clothes and footwear
Morning tea and lunch
A full water bottle
Sunblock
Please make sure all clothing and belongings are clearly named.
The day is expected to begin at the farm at approximately 9:30 am, with a meet and greet and safety briefing for everyone before planting begins. We expect to have lunch at around 12:30 pm, finish planting and tidy the site in the afternoon, and leave the farm at approximately 2:00 pm.
We are really looking forward to this opportunity for our students to get outdoors, work together and make a positive contribution to our local environment.
If your child has any medical needs, allergies, dietary requirements or other needs that may affect their participation and you have not already informed the school, please contact me before the planting day.
Ngā mihi,
Sharyn Gibbens
Principal
